Kvöldvaka

Location-based & mobile, multi-sensory AR experience / in production (2020-2021)

Logline
Kvöldvaka is a multi-sensory augmented reality documentary inspired by Icelandic folklore redefining our relationship with nature in an era of climate change.

My roles
· Narrative Design: Starting with a deep research on the Icelandic Huldufólk folklore I developed the key characters, interactive storyline, and narrative elements of the experience. For the most accurate representation of the Icelandic folklore, the narrative development was a collaborative process with the Icelandic Huldufólk seer, author & environmental activist Raga Jonsdottír, and the University of Iceland’s folkloristic professor Terry Gunnel.

· Interaction Design: Kvöldvaka being one of the first interactive narrative AR/MR experiences specifically developed for the medium of mobile AR, my goal in the interaction design was to develop a smooth and natural interaction language. Together with the director, I designed playful interactions that were based on the user’s movements (rather than touching buttons, for example) and we designed the experience so that it made the tech almost invisible in order to keep the focus on the user’s natural environment. 🌱

· Co-Producer: From its initial idea to a fully developed prototype phase, my co-production work for Kvöldvaka included grant writing, public presentation at international professional forums and festivals, as well as working on the volumetric capture and sound production itself.
